Notes on Zane & Elizabeth’s Familial Relationship
- Elizabeth (human) is the daughter of Zane (badger-human) and Naomi (human).
- This was unplanned (Zane’s flirtiness and recklessness aren’t on his side with this), but was fully supported by both parties once they realized the situation.
- Naomi was important to Zane before the pregnancy occurred.
- Naomi passed away when Elizabeth was four years old, of an illness she had been struggling with long before she met Zane.
- Zane was well aware of this before he got involved with Naomi.
- Despite the bitter situation, Naomi was ecstatic that she lived long enough to see Elizabeth grow up as much as she did. That didn’t stop her from always hoping for another day together though, just one more day…
- Elizabeth
- Zane is currently raising/taking care of Elizabeth on his own.
- Zoey will also provide some pseudo-motherly assistance on occasion, but isn’t attempting to take the place of Naomi. Zane is well aware of this, and is ever grateful for what Zoey does for Elizabeth anyway.
- This was unplanned (Zane’s flirtiness and recklessness aren’t on his side with this), but was fully supported by both parties once they realized the situation.
- Elizabeth is the most important thing in the world to Zane, bar none.
- While Zane would’ve said this was true before Naomi’s death, it became so much more prevalent once she was gone.
- Zane is fiercely protective of Elizabeth, frequently overly so.
- Zane tries hard to balance his recklessness (which he is aware of) with being a good father. This is currently the biggest worry in his life.
- He never seems to think he does well enough for her (common enough parental thought). He feels the need to do the equivalent of two parents, which just isn’t realistic. He knows this, but it persists.
- Zane’s personality and habits have a significant impact on Elizabeth, unsurprisingly.
- Elizabeth is a bit careless, akin to Zane’s recklessness but less extreme.
- Whereas Zane’s recklessness will get him into fights without thinking, Elizabeth will do things like start talking to strangers or run after animals without thinking.
- Some of this is just from being a child, but some is definitely also influenced by her father’s antics.
- Elizabeth is very into running around all the time like her dad does.
- Again, some of this is just from being a child and having lots of energy, but the influence is still clear.
- Unlike most people, Elizabeth isn’t intimidated at all by Zane, and gets upset when people speak out at/about him.
- Zane doesn’t intentionally intimidate people often, but avoids it at all costs when Elizabeth is around (unless they seem like a threat to her, in which case he tries to make sure Elizabeth doesn’t notice).
- Zane is also unhappy when he intimidates people unintentionally. Elizabeth picking up on that feeling is likely how she became so adamant about it.
- Unlike her father, Elizabeth is quite aware of (and careful with) her clothing. She’s also quite annoyed at her dad’s lack of awareness on that front.
- Elizabeth is a bit careless, akin to Zane’s recklessness but less extreme.
Zane’s thoughts about Elizabeth (in his own words)
- “Little Lizzie, my precious baby girl! She would probably complain if she heard me saying that… ya know, claiming she’s not a baby anymore. How can she expect me not to when she’s so damn adorable! She’s so great, not afraid of anything or anybody, just like yours truly. And have you seen how much energy the lil tyke has? Ha! Ain’t no one else like her let me tell you!” [Note: Zane requested several sentences here be removed as he didn’t want his quote to be quite so long.] “I probably come across as a bit obsessed. Probably am a bit obsessed… I like to think I’m doing a good job with her, but… I dunno. What even is ‘good enough’ in this case? If Naomi were still here… she would probably know better than I do. Shit, we’ve been on our own for four years now, and I still don’t feel like I know what I’m doing. I just want the best for her, ya know? I wish I could put the rest of my life on hold, the rest of the world on hold even. If only.”
Elizabeth’s thoughts about Zane (in purely her own words)
- “My dad! I love love love him! Very much! He’s so gigantic and strong and fast and he makes me snacks whenever I want and… Um… We like looking for snails in the park! We lie on the ground and we look for a long time, I love them just like he does! Also I know mom is dead. We go visit her in the cemetery park and we talk to her sometimes. I miss her lots and lots, but I’m glad she’s still always listening for me. And I have dad so I never get lonely except sometimes. Also dad’s clothes suck! He likes wearing awful clothes with a million holes, and when he gets new clothes they get more holes! ZiZi [Note: referring to Zoey] is on my side, but he doesn’t listen! Sometimes I try dressing him up at the store but then he looks funny and I don’t want the nice clothes to get holey so I make him take them off. He doesn’t get it ya know? I think he is very happy to have me to help him. And I’m happy when he helps me too! I hope we get to have fun together forever and ever.”
